Children are not mini-adults: a comprehensive review of paediatric uniqueness in clinical care
The physiological, pharmacological, immunological, and psychological uniqueness of paediatric patients necessitates specialized approaches to their medical care. This synthesis comprehensively examines the fundamental differences between children and adults across multiple domains of clinical practice, emphasizing why children cannot be treated simply as "mini-adults." The developmental physiology, pharmacological considerations, immune system development, surgical challenges, psychological factors, diagnostic approaches, therapeutic adaptations, ethical considerations, and long-term implications of paediatric care have been systematically explored. By synthesizing current evidence and expert perspectives, this review provides healthcare professionals with essential insights into the specialized knowledge required for optimal paediatric care. The recognition of these fundamental differences is crucial for ensuring safe, effective, and developmentally appropriate healthcare delivery to paediatric populations.
