Evaluation of surgical and non-surgical interventions in pectus excavatum management: nuss procedure vs. vacuum bell therapy
Pectus excavatum (PE) is a congenital chest wall deformity affecting 1 in 400 to 1 in 1,000 live births, predominantly males. The Nuss procedure, a minimally invasive surgery, and vacuum bell therapy (VBT), a non-surgical alternative, are primary treatments. The Nuss procedure is effective for severe PE but carries risks like bar displacement and potential damage to the heart and lungs. VBT, suitable for milder cases and younger patients, offers fewer complications but requires consistent long-term use for optimal results. Comparing these modalities highlights their distinct advantages and limitations. Comprehensive, randomized controlled trials are needed to refine treatment guidelines and enhance patient care in pediatric surgery.
